Relax And Laugh

optic103

Before I begin prancing around and strutting my stuff, I have to sincerely apologize for the absence of last week’s Relax And Laugh. Yeah. I’ve not been doing too well in the past days, and I’d say I’m recovering, but so far I’ve been having this rebounding effect like a ball bouncing in a continuous loop; so at a point I could be okay and at another point I’d be worse off than I started. I would blame it on several things, but let’s just say it’s a little in my mind and out of my mind… so it’s a complicated mass of intertwined things I can’t particularly lay out just yet.
Anyhoo, it’s another Saturday and you know the deal. Make sure you’re constantly clicking and sharing because it’s time for another round of giggles, chuckles and laughing out loudness.

Cyanide & Happiness leads the pack today. Then we’ve got Dueling Analogs, TimeCowBoy (a tumblr by the way), our dear Optical Overload, early pioneer of R&L ExtraLife, new comer DamnLOL and White Ninja. I should get used to this kind of comedy. It’s refreshing. But don’t get too used to the huge amounts of webcomics, that may not be a regular thing this summer.

Delete Your Browsing History [Picture]

browsing history

Remember the case with the tabs? Yeah… What if there was a situation in which you could delete so much of your browsing history? How much? Well…

The beginning of time… thinking about that is scary in its own rights. Not to mention the fact that your browser may have been existing right before that fateful day you installed it. Either that or its pre-installed with a time-tracking machine.

My Fairy Tail Tale

Fairy_Tail_logo

36 episodes after I watched the first one that had my jaws dropping at the insane and over-exuberant antics performed by the strange characters I had been given -the talkative girl, the flying cat and the fire-breathing guy who couldn’t last on any moving vehicle- I’m still asking myself when I’ll be able to predict what’s going to happen next, and each time I decide to feel like a whiz and make some predictions which of course get tossed back at me most of the time… That is the fate I face as I constantly watch Fairy Tail, following its absorbing and at certain times ridiculous storyline. But the better part of it? Even the characters involved tend to break the 4th wall and complain about how lousy some things can get. You don’t see that kind of humour mixed up with so much action nowadays without the action feeling redundant and too pushy.

Fairy Tail is a manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima, which has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine since August 23, 2006 and still continues to be made to this very day. The anime adaptation began in 2006 and has spanned over 130 episodes as of this moment. That means I have over 100 episodes to dash through if I want to catch up properly, and I do not plan on using manga to speed things up anytime soon.
The story follows Lucy Heartfilia, a Celestial Mage who eventually joins her favorite mage guild after meeting Natsu Dragneel, a boy who was trained by the dragon Igneel and got the name Salamander. She comes to know the people of Fairy Tail and becomes especially close to Gray Fullbuster, an ice mage with a habit of stripping who is also Natsu nemesis and close pal; as well as Erza Scarlet, a mage who uses the magic style Ex-Quip that allows her to change armor and gives her access to lots of armor at any given time. She has been shown to use her Ex-Quip to wear a construction worker’s uniform, a chef’s hat and apron as well as a slim fitting dinner gown; and Happy, a flying, talking cat that hatched out of an egg Natsu found years ago.

L-R: Erza, Lucy, Natsu, Gray, Happy

Fairy Tail blends together action with comedy with humor with tragedy with plain stupidity. It’s a mix that’s not done very often and has a tendency to get annoying at certain times, and admittedly it does. However, it redeems itself by not taking itself too serious and then switching the tone abruptly on you… so you’re left trying to relax and then you’re hit with an event that has you gasping on the edge of your seat waiting for the next sequence of scenes to unfold themselves. One thing I particularly like is the good natured comedy involved in the show, and the way this is augmented by Natsu’s carefree attitude.
For example, at one point in later episodes, a village head begs the team (comprising Lucy, Natsu, Happy, Gray and Erza) to help destroy a violet moon because it was turning them into demons. While a sorrowful song plays in the background and Lucy is trying to give her condolences, Natsu suddenly bursts out pointing out the horns the villagers have and exclaiming on how cool they are. Then he’s reprimanded and told the villagers don’t see it as cool and then the story goes back to its normal gloomy pitch.

Foes in this show has varied on different levels; from dark guilds to rival official guilds to past friends, it’s like there’s a never ending current of story to tap from when you look closer at the picture. From the outside, it usually seems like episodes are just different collections of different moments, never intertwining unless by chance supporting characters decide to slip out from one plot hole and land in a major role later on. As to be expected, mages take on missions and receive pay according to the class of the mission, and Lucy’s team is notorious for destroying various parts of the city when on missions; usually meaning that most (if not all) of their reward goes into damages and repairs. It’s even a continuous gag for Lucy complain about not being able to pay the rent on her apartment time and time again because of the problems her team face with consecutive missions.

Fairy Tail looks like it still has quite a long way to go, and while I don’t want to sound all nampy-pampy about it, I think my attachment with this anime may just rival my attachment to Beelzebub. After all, it was Beelzebub’s ending that pushed me into properly checking out Fairy Tail, so I’ll say that’s a fair things to say. Any doubts on Fairy Tail shouldn’t stand strong, as the show caters to quite a wide category of people. If you’re the punch, punch, kick type this will entertain you. If comedy’s your thing, this is a good stop. Engaging story? It has its moments too. Extreme fan service? Maybe Maken-Ki or Queen’s Rebellion will be better for you. But really, Fairy Tail is so full of colors you may lose count of how many times you get amazed.

He gets the picture.

I’m sure to continue. And when the loads of free time comes, I’ll load up the episodes and have a happily ever after marathon to get up to speed with things.
Shi, shi, tou…

Batman Needs To Be More Mature [Picture]

halolz-dot-com-batmanarkhamcity-penisgel

Batman’s our caped crusader who rules the night and even sometimes dominates the day. So with all that badassery and responsibility consequently resting on him, you’d expect him to be more grown up than this…

Then again I can’t really blame him. One, penis graffiti can be amazing, and you need to have some fun. Two, exploding penis graffiti is even more amazing.

First Impressions: Black Lagoon

black_lagoon__(6)_236

Summer’s been here, and that’s the time to fly through as many shows as possible (even if my school’s calender does not recognize summer because of the constant rain we get here) and time and time again you get to do some throwback hits that create overwhelming wells of nostalgia.. see what I did there? No? Moving on. While on the search for some Beelzebub anime I happen to come across a reference to one of my favorite anime of all time, and I decided to do a search to see if I could get my hands on them, which thankfully I did. Getting the first episode and starting it to see the first scenes and the first looks of the protagonists gave me such a wonderful trip down memory lane I felt high. And then of course the opening theme was so familiar and so dear, I couldn’t help but go along with it including the gun shots in my tunes. Enough of the romanciniciation, what I’m talking about right here is the 2006 anime series Black Lagoon.

Black Lagoon follows the sudden changes and new adventures (not in the fantasy sense) of Rokuro ‘Rock’ Okajima who is an everyday office worker that suddenly gets kidnapped when a ship containing company shipment he was following gets hijacked by the pirate team Lagoon Company consisting of Revy, Dutch and Benny. Revy’s the team main marksman, and is popular known as Two Hand for her extensive use and professionalism of her twin pistols to shoot with ease. Her weapons are custom-made stainless steel 9 mm Beretta M92 “Sword Cutlass Special” pistols, and she’s always in her element with this. Look at it as a Lara Croft but with more profanity, booze, smokes and a bigger lust to kill first and forget that negotiations exist.
Dutch is the leader and employer of Lagoon Company, and was once a marine in the Vietnam War… though he doesn’t really participate in battles like Revy does. He also captains the boat Black Lagoon that the team use, and the one who gave Rokuro the nickname Rock.
Benny’s the Florida fugitive, who according to him did ‘a few stupid things’ and ended up on the most wanted list of most organizations. He serves as the team’s technical expert.

L-R: Benny, Rock, Revy, Dutch.

The first episode gives you a good introduction into the ways of the several characters and pushes you into the front of the excitement without wasting time on sloppy developments and flashbacks. The second and third continue the streak, and slowly let more information about the pasts of the protagonists and how they eventually ended up in Lagoon Company. Like Dutch said, their main goal is to put food on the table, no matter what it takes.
Black Lagoon was good to me then and is still good to me now. A good point to note is the fact that the English dub of this anime is one of the best you’ll find around, and I even recommend that you go for that version. The voice actors are spectacular and capture each character in their entirety; Dutch and his voice that commands respect, Revy’s pumped up profane filled high pitched voice, Benny’s cool, calm and fun voice and Rock’s innocent yet accepting-the-fates voice.
The manga is still ongoing, as well as the anime. The first season is just Black Lagoon, the second is Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage and the third -which is so far some OVA episodes- is tagged Roberta’s Blood Trail (though people have argued this isn’t a third season). Again, the English dub is the way to go with this. Last time I didn’t get the chance to finish this last time; this time I’m making sure it’s going to be done.

Black Lagoon is written and illustrated by Rei Hiroe.

Blog people, hello.  As is usual with me my last post before this one was years ago (6months? I think), and I’m sorry I haven’t taken the time to write more poems and post more frequently. This poem has been on my mind since December last year, it shouldn’t have taken so long to write it, actually it didn’t…it just took me a long ass time to start. About the post, I hope you understand it more than you like it but not as much as I hope it remains in your minds for a little while after you’re done reading, and if there’s nothing in the poem for you to understand I hope there’s something in you for the poem to stimulate.

It is the ultimate hope of writers, consciously or unconsciously, to influence with their pieces…and I hope this influences you, one way or the other.

“I know you all, I have seen you, in your dreams, in your minds, in all you do that makes you human, I see you, I know you…but you do not know me and I don’t know why”   –  Someone important, but no longer alive.

It is a fever.

  The poet

They found the poet outside the park

His steps spoke many words of wine

His upper half seemed half asleep

And his feet walked a crooked line

His arms were spread as if to fly

His lips apart as though to speak

The telltale flush of liquid joy

Told tales of  rum from cheek to cheek

The night herself caroused with him

Drunk on sadness, drunk on care

And drink they drank, the weary lovers

Setting wine against despair

The bonds of reason, broken down

His mind amok, and absent sense

The world in woe, the world in glory

Lay before his presidence

And it was then they walked to him

Rudely rousing man from dream

Casting eye on village bard

Taking man as man would seem

“Sing for us again, o bard

Cast your words at senses keen”

This was why they broke his peace

Winters twice his summers seen

“Sing for us again o bard

Spin sweet words from bitter truth

Stir the embers of your heart

Dig through elder years to youth. And

Let the fountain spring with might!!

Showering us with wisdom earned

Showing us the link in hand

Of teachers harsh and lessons learned

Free yourself from wine’s embrace!

We would hear a tale or two”

Turns to them, a wizened face

“Ask not man, but what is due.”

Graying eyes regard the gathered

Moving on, from face to face

“The world whirls in the hands of time

And yet all things remain in place”

“As yet all men remain the same

The board reset a dozen times

Pi-eces unaltered, so is game

Though rearranged, the given lines

You come to me as bank to debtor

You plague me with unbridled want

Says at last, man to tormentor

‘Cease at once your unjust haunt”"

It is a fever

“It is not a gift so given

It is not a boon bestowed

Nor is sight beheld as blessing

When the eyes have overflowed

With the sorrows of existence

Pain cavorts with all men born

Know the price of your persistence

Hear the words of man forlorn

What is loss compared to weakness?

What is pain compared to need?

When the soul suffers from sickness

To give blood to those who bleed

O for those suffering in secret

O for hidden scars concealed

Know a secret’s mark of secrets

Is in wounds that never healed

The world at large, and I remain

Numb in spirit, numb of mind

My inner coldness feed by pain

Reaped from years left far behind

It is a fever that I have

It is an illness I possess

It is a symptom that you worship

It is a sign that you profess

To love, to need, to love to hear

While I remain diseased of soul

You chant and clap then disappear

Then falls to me, each telling’s toll

It is a sadness that I feel

It is madness that I suffer

When the muses offer gifts

Turn your backs and run for cover

Talent has a price, and paid

This price I have, each passing day

Rise to cup and rise to can

Drink my fill then come what may

All my masters come before me

Warned me of the poet’s curse

Know you all of Byron’s story

Know you all that Poe’s was worse

Happiness is bound to beauty

Joy to all that beauty, see

But for those that birth said beauty

All is pain and tragedy

Listen to my fading voice, now

Listen to my silent plea

Know the doom of every poet

And ask of this, no more from me

I will fellowship with Bacchus

Gimlets of the finest sort

Rise to can and drunken glory

Fall to pleasure and cavort

Now my night bids me return

Wine is all that shields from sorrow

Sets me free from all concern

Trouble enough, will be tomorrow”

His soul unburdened, back unbent

All is caught in a lengthy pause

He turns to go, the air is rent

With sounds of cheer, and of applause

Now lowering balding head to ground

“Man may speak but none may hear

Sing for us again o Bard,

Has now become a thing to fear”

First post this year. There will be more. Someone important is no longer here and because of that I’ve decided to quote some lines from Death, Be Not Proud by John Donne :

…From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,

Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,

And soonest our best men with thee do go,

Rest of their bones, and soul’s delivery.

Album Review: Amberian Dawn – Circus Black

amberian dawn

The year 2012 has had it’s fair share of album releases occuring in the early stages of it’s inception, and among those releases comes an album from the well-known Finnish symphonic power metal band Amberian Dawn, which was formed in 2006 by Tuomas Seppälä and Tommi Kuri. The group is composed of Heidi Parviainen the lead vocalist; Tuomas Seppälä the keyboardist, guitarist, producer and engineer; Kasperi Heikkinen and Kimmo Korhonen, fellow guitarists, Jukka Koskinen the bassist and Heikki Saari, drummer and percussion handler.

Circus Black is the fourth studio album of Amberian Dawn released in February 2012 under Spinefarm Records. Consisting of 10 tracks spanning from 3 minutes to over 5 minutes, giving a total music time of 40 minutes 47 seconds from the very first track to the last one. The album is solely symphonic rock, with elements of fast paced drumbeats and slow guitar solos dotting the tracks at one point or the other.
With Circus Black, Amberian Dawn outdid themselves in immersive ways. One particular thing to note is the symmetry in which they flow with their songs. The name Circus Black does not just go as far as being the album’s name, but also depicts its meaning on the album art. Besides that, the songs in the album maintain that circus theme; dark clowns and sinister rides that may lead to your imminent demise. Amberian Dawn stay true to the theme, and never once falter from the circus theme flow. The first song, which is also called Circus Black, introduces listeners with high pitched circus guitar strings, which is supported seconds later by incredible fast paced drumbeats. The symphony and the rock blend properly to immerse you in it’s addictive rhythm. It’s a welcome introduction into Circus Black, like the man you see in front of a tent who cleverly works words to pique your interest into entering. Other songs do not fail to captivate you, whether it is the lyrics that bind you or the awe you’re struck with at how beautifully the instruments are strung together.

Each song on the album is based on a story, meaning listeners will be able to pick up references here and there while listening and enjoying their fill. Heidi Parviainen, the lead singer does not fail in the use of the supremacy that is her soprano voice, as she clearly goes over the top and delivers breath-taking vocals that would have you speechless. Circus Black is a healthy mix of fast and slow, with tracks like Circus Black, Cold Kiss, Fight and Letter giving you quick steps and resonating sounds to follow while tracks like Crimson Flower (which has references to Beauty And The Beast), Charnel’s Ball and Guardian give you more slow, melancholic rhythms that have you silenced in awe as you search for the undying meanings to Heidi’s lyrics. Notable tracks that stay very true to the circus theme are Circus Black, Charnel’s Ball and Letter. The 8th track, The Rivalry Between Good And Evil, is a 3 minutes 58 seconds track consisting of nothing but instrumentals, displaying the prowess of band’s mechanical skills. Guardian, the 9th track, as well as the longest offers a more melancholic and orchestra rendered sound; with hooks containing nothing but the chorus of several voices singing in harmony to nothing but a tune, residing to allow Heidi tell the story of a lost child who is saved by her Guardian. Thie story is almost reminiscent to River Of Tuoni, except here the child lives to see her mother. The album ends with the explosive, invigorating song Lily Of The Moon, delivering lasting effects to make you want to get back to the top of the playlist and relish each track again.

Amberian Dawn had the sole purpose of doing something rather different with Circus Black, and while their other albums (River Of Tuoni, The Clouds Of Northland Thunder and End of Eden) are pieces that have graced airwaves, Circus Black has managed to carve out a new niche in symphonic rock. The vocal content is inspiring, the drums and percussions are outstanding and the overall output rock that makes you appreciate it for its sincerity and acknowledgement of its roots.

Stand out tracks: Circus Black, Charnel’s Ball, Letter, Guardian.

Sonic Adventure 2 heading to consoles this Fall

wallpaper_sa2_640

Seems Fall is a nice time of the year as more and more production companies are pinning their releases during the Fall season. While there’s the possibility that promises could be broken and dates pushed, it’s still nice to know that there’s quite a number of things to expect. Another gaming company has dropped a shell, and it’s the company that’s responsible for our favorite blue hedgehog, Sega. During Sega’s Comic-Con event, it was announced that a Dreamcast port of the popular Sonic Adventure 2 will be hitting PSN and XBLA. This could be a HD remake, or a direct port; but knowing how these things work it’s most likely going to be a HD remake. Either way, that doesn’t change the fact that we get to control Sonic and Shadow on our PS3s and Xbox 360s sometime later this year.
The video below, courtesy of Joystiq, is from the event. And it features a lot of screaming fans. A HUGE lot at that. If I was in the crowd I sure as hell would have screamed so loud I’d need half a dozen cups of tea later on.

First Footage For Adventure Time’s 3DS Game

adventuretime58

A lot of us are very familiar with, and completely adore, Pendleton Ward’s hit series on Cartoon Network Adventure Time; what with it’s mix of fantasy laced with child-like glee and lots of humour both in the light and dark side of the coin. So it shouldn’t be surprising that a game is being made out of it. Called Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!! (which is a long and somewhat lame name I have to say), the game follows our heroes Jake the dog and Finn the human as they chase after the Ice King, who stole their garbage apparently because he wants to make a princess out of it. This plot is well… compared to the story plots wrapped around individual episodes of the show and the underlying story points that get looked at again later in the series, the plot of this game is well…
Footage of the game has been released by WayForward, showing a side-scrolling platformer experience as well as top-down navigating sections reminiscent of 8-bit games of old (some Final Fantasy titles could come to mind). It’s good to see Jake’s magic powers and Finn’s sword doing nice work there, and the Cosmic Owl and Giant Worm King are also present in the game. You should remember the Giant King Worm from the episode Marceline returns to the treehouse to reclaim it.

Finn and Jake’s new adventure in the land of Ooo is expected to hit shelves Fall 2012. Shmow-zow!
