Album Review: Boom Boom Satellites – Photon

boom boom

Let’s take a quick minute to talk about Boom Boom Satellites; the Japanese Electronica (but really, a little bit of every genre) outfit has, at this point, amassed a pretty decent following. A few EPs and 2 quality full length albums will do that for a band. Their debut album Out Loud, was a striking introduction to the methodology and musical stylings of Michiyuki Kawashima and Masayuki Nakano, while their follow up Umbra, is even more amplified, serving to show the duos growth over the course of their career. Now we are facing their lucky Number #3 album, the aptly titled Photon, a joyous yet dark (no doubt thanks to Umbra’s more shadowy construction), slightly perfected template for just what Boom Boom Satellites is musically capable of.

New Music: Azealia Banks – Fuck Up The Fun

While enjoying her stay in Japan, Azealia Banks decided to drop a new track titled “Fuck The Fun Up”. Produced by DJ Diplo and DJ Master-D, Fuck the Fun Up is a fast paced, drum heavy track. Azealia is an insanely fast spitter. You’re gonna have to rewind a few times just to digest everything she is saying. Her talent shines through in this song, and she kills the beat with such effortless confidence. This is sure to get the streets buzzing and the crowd pumping.

The competition should be on their toes.

Thanks to Stereogum for the heads up

Album Review: Childish Gambino – Camp

It’s an understatement to say that 2011 has been an amazing year for Donald Glover. Besides being one of the stars in the critically acclaimed NBC comedy Community, Glover has also had a very successful music career under the moniker Childish Gambino; a name he generated from the online Wu-Tang name generator. Childish Gambino has been releasing a steady stream of free music since 2008, but 2011 will see the release of his first official studio LP -under independent label Glassnote Records- titled Camp. Where as his previous releases consisted of him rapping over various indie rock instrumentals (I am Just a Rapper 1 & 2), or a directionless collection of good songs (Culdesac), Camp is a coherent album, built from the ground up (with sole production by Glover himself, and friend/composer Ludwig Goransson)  with the intent of telling a story. The use of violins, a choir and a stadium sized “arena rock” sound, coupled with Gambino’s sincere lyrics sets the stage for an engaging album.

Featured Music: Alligator Sky remix feat. B.o.B – Owl City

Owl City’s Adam Young is known for his playful sounds, electronic-based instrumentals and his inspiring lyrics of hope and brighter futures to come, and it’s instilled so much in Alligator Sky. Who better to top it off with hip-hop lyricism than the one and only B.o.B. Alligator Sky is about anything you could imagine on a happy scale, and B.o.B’s ‘cosmic’ verses give it an even happier feel. It’s rich in content and keeps you pressing the previous button to start all over again..
Adam’s solid singing with B.o.B’s sleek rhyming make this a nice treat for the ears.

There are about 4 versions of this song, I haven’t heard them all. Regardless, this is one that I respect so much and believe you would too…

Featured Music: Radiohead – Lotus Flower

Lotus Flower, the lead (and probably only) Single from Radiohead’s 8th Studio Album The King of Limbs is a steady, atmospheric tune. With a Black and White music video to accompany it, Lotus Flower is an instant classic that won’t be forgotten soon Continue Reading →

Music: Grinderman – No Pussy Blues (Adam Freeland remix)

Alternative Rock band Grinderman’s aptly title song about sexual frustration “No pussy Blues” never really caught my attention, but this remix by Adam Freeland sure as hell did. I first heard the Adam Freeland remix of No Pussy Blues when it was used as the background music for an episode of Skins series 5 near the finale. Its an awesome song with a great beat, you are practically guaranteed to get up and dance or just sit back and laugh out loud when listening to Grinderman talking about using every trick in the book to try and score some sweet, sweet gash and fail miserably.
