Lotus Flower, the lead (and probably only) Single from Radiohead’s 8th Studio Album The King of Limbs is a steady, atmospheric tune. With a Black and White music video to accompany it, Lotus Flower is an instant classic that won’t be forgotten soon
Radiohead is known for their experimentation and each album they release tends to be genre shifting in ways that other Alternative rock acts can’t even fathom. Their 8th studio album, The King of Limbs is no different. Lotus Flower is easily the most mainstream and commercially palatable song on The King of Limbs, but that doesn’t make it any less of a good song. Lotus Flower is a tightly crafted song that immediately comes off as warm yet distant. Its easily accessible but its sounds different – at least to the average listeners who happen to come across this song playing on MTV Hits. Making use of a steady looping drum beat and lead singer Thom Yorkes falsetto vocals Lotus Flower creates this atmospheric yet intimate track. Its enchanting.

The music video for Lotus flower is also worth mentioning. The video is shot in black and white and features Thom Yorke doing the craziest dances you will ever see a sober grown man do. This might just be one of radiohead’s most iconic videos yet.

It’s a classic and in my opinion deserves to be listed despite age and balance.

Paint It, Black by The Rolling Stones. These people are amazing. And believe it or not, Paint It, black aired 1966! The 13th of May, which was a Friday to be exact!

I decided to go with the original photo arts of the song and their album as a salutary honour to have known and enjoyed their song. I know someone right now who would literally abuse me for liking such a song at this time and age, not to mention the fact that it’s number 3 on my list. But it is, and it’s here to stay for as long as this post exists.
The song’s about a man mourning his dead girlfriend… and as funeral rites he wished to see everything in black to commemorate her death. Pretty spooky right? The song started out as a joke of sorts, and eventually got it’s lyrics and instrumentals and all that, then moved on to be one of the biggest hits in the history of music as we know it.

Truth be told, I had forgotten about this song almost entirely; last time I heard it was about 2-5years ago and even then I didn’t really know the name of the song. I had an inkling that The Rolling Stones had a hand for creating such a musical story, but I didn’t get the name at that point and I didn’t really care about getting the name. Later on I regretted my actions and searched my memory feverishly when the tune began replaying in my head. Unfortunately I had no luck in remembering the name of the song, the artistes responsible or how the song went. Only a small part that swam through my mind and that was ‘something something Paint It Black’.. just like that. Eventually I gave up my search for the song and moved on.
Fast forward years later, and I’m re-watching The Devil’s Advocate when the end comes after Keanu Reeves leaves the courtroom, and then the song comes again. My brother changed the channel at that moment, but I immediately begged that he return it. Like a dream, Mike Jagger’s voice poured out of the TV’s speakers with Jack Nitzsche’s piano playing skills following suit, I couldn’t help but stick my butt on the front couch and listen with complete enjoyment. Then just like that I remembered that I needed th name of the song and who sang it. I scanned through the whole cast, but I didn’t see anything to help me on my quest. Taking to the internet, I searched profusely for the ending song to The Devil’s Advocate and eventually hit the jackpot when I came across The Internet Movie database.

Here I got the movie’s name, actors/actresses and soundtrack list. There I saw it, what I had been searching for for years now right on my PC screen saying hello and beaming. So I did the honours and got the song. From then on, I couldn’t stop. The Rolling Stones have a unique way in dispelling their songs, and they do that with much precision too. This song was featured as the theme song for Twisted Metal Black, a PS2 game. What’s not to love about this song? It’s Pop and Rock together, comes from the 60′s and tells a tale about a man mourning his dead girlfriend.

Rest in Peace Nujabes

Coming in at Number 3 is Aurarian Dance by Nujabes. Pronounced new-jah-bes

Nujabes is a Japanese hip-hop producer. Now let me clear up any confusion you might have, I know the only exposure most of people might have to the Japanese Hip hop industry is the song “Tokyo Drift” by Teriyaki Boys from the Movie Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift but I’m here to tell you, don’t judge Nujabes on that (admittedly awesome) song. He doesn’t actually rap, he makes beats. I’m not trying to justify this mans talents, I’m just clearing up any confusions or misconceptions anyone might have.

Nujabes was born Jun Seba. He frequently collaborated with many American and Japanese underground hip hop acts. His beats are regarded as cutting edge and very out of the box. He channels some jazz influences in his work.

I discovered Nujabes song Aurarian Dance from the anime “Samurai Champloo”, (its a blend of Samurai and hip hop influences) for which Nujabes provided the sound track. I always knew Samurai Champloo and I always
heard about the shows legendary soundtrack but I never bothered to listen. I have a schedule when it comes to anime and Samurai Champloo was actually scheduled for the end of the year (next week actually) at the time of discovering Nujabes music. 

Now here comes the hard part, I discovered Nujabes music in death, he was involved in a car accident and died on the 26th of February this year. I woke up that morning as usual and I decided to read my usual blogs, and there it was in big bold letters “SAMURAI CHAMPLOO MUSIC PRODUCER IS DEAD!”. I clicked on the article and read through it immediately and all that was left to do after was play his song.

I had NEVER listened to that song prior to that day and the moment I finished listening to it, I had tears in my eyes, I have tears in my eyes while I’m writing this to be honest.

Aurarian Dance is such a beautiful song. Its so relaxing to listen to. This is one of those songs you can just put on and feel free, like all the burden in your life is has been lifted away, its only you and the song. This song genuinely makes me happy. This is the song I play when I get home from a very stressful day. This is the song I play when I want to have a good nights rest. This song is so wishful, hopeful and optimistic yet calming and relaxing. The mellow beat coupled with the optimistic Violin and wonderful piano make you realize that life is a precious thing and something you must enjoy.

Of course Aurarian Dance isnt his only great song. There are loads of amazing songs from Nujabes, some gems include:

To Impress the Empress: The song starts with this beautiful piano piece and you hear a voice asking ”so what have you tried lately?” , *the song starts to intensify* “thats a start…thats good” “because here, you can do anything you want, no matter how crazy it is” The drums and beat kick in, its just beautiful.

Mystline: A song primary characterize by  this enchanting  and haunting piano piece. Listening to this song is like going on a voyage of wonder and discovery.

Counting Stars: The strings in this song are just gorgeous. its such a wonderful and calming melody.

The Space between Two Worlds: The beat on this song comes in immediately, and it comes in hard, its ecstatic yet calming.

Battlecry: This song was used as the opening theme for Samurai Champloo and features rapper Shing02, who can rap in both English and Japanese. This man is a lyrical genius. His word play is on point and the Nujabes beat is the icing on the cake. I’m sorry I just have to post Shin02 lyrics from battle cry so you guys can understand how good the man is

Coming in at Number 4 is Lisztomania by Phoenix.

Phoenix is a French alternative rock/pop band, they’ve been around for a while now and have 4 studio albums under their belt. Their latest, 2009′s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix being the latest and their most critically successful album to date.

Opening Track Lisztomania is a joy to listen to.

On a normal day I would paraphrase but I think this definition is better suited

“ Lisztomania or Liszt fever is a term used to describe the intense fan frenzy directed toward Franz Liszt during his performances. This frenzy first occurred in Berlin in 1841 and was later coined by Heinrich Heine in a feuilleton he wrote on April 25, 1844, discussing the 1844 Parisian concert season. The word is a portmanteau of “Liszt” and “mania“. Lisztomania was characterized by intense levels of hysteria demonstrated by fans.”

Basically there was a guy named Franz Liszt, and he was an amazing performer and people literally went crazy for him

Lisztomania works on this theme a little bit. Lead singer Thomas Mars starts by singing “ So sentimental; not sentimental, no!/ Romantic; not disgusting yet”. This song is about musical frustration. Its Thomas asking what does it take  for Phoenix’ music to become universally loved and adored? What does the group have to do to let their music induce Lisztomania (to a lesser degree of course) in people BUT without selling out to commercialism and the crappy money hungry pop music industry?

You know? whatever it is Phoenix did, it worked like a charm! Lisztomania is a beautiful song. On the surface it’s a HIGHLY addictive and catchy pop song. You hear this song and you think its a love song, you imagine this as the song you play when reminiscing about the greatest times you had or are going to have  with the man or woman you love. It just blows my mind how catchy and care free this song is on the surface.

Listening to this song is like, well…to borrow a quote..

“It’s the perfect form of pleasure, it’s exquisite and leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one ask?”

you listen to it once, its catches you and you just can not stop listening to this song.

I strongly urge you to listen to this song.

Its simply amazing.
