TLL – Tolerate . Listen . Learn

I haven’t written on Dancil in Ages and I figured the best way to usher in my new year is through one of my thoughts resulting from a pensive moment I had initially shared here.

TLL – Tolerate . Listen . Learn

The subject matter was a three word “punch line” I came up with to best simplify a phrase I have grown to live by; “Seek first to understand, before being understood” amongst many other phrases such as this famous one from Jesus Christ “Judge not, lest ye be Judged”. I had first stumbled unto this phrase about seeking to understand while reading Stephen Covey’s Seven habits of highly effective people book and it stood out amongst the plethora of great writing and advice from him. This phrase stood as a rather poignant foundation to my next set of innate quotes, both of which can be found in the “babse who?” page of this website. What are they you might wonder? The first of it is; “Anything Can be Justified.” and the second; “Life is not about rights or wrongs but actions and consequences of those actions.” With the premise set, I’d love to take you to the world of TLL.

Erunioni

Blog people, hello.  As is usual with me my last post before this one was years ago (6months? I think), and I’m sorry I haven’t taken the time to write more poems and post more frequently. This poem has been on my mind since December last year, it shouldn’t have taken so long to write it, actually it didn’t…it just took me a long ass time to start. About the post, I hope you understand it more than you like it but not as much as I hope it remains in your minds for a little while after you’re done reading, and if there’s nothing in the poem for you to understand I hope there’s something in you for the poem to stimulate.

It is the ultimate hope of writers, consciously or unconsciously, to influence with their pieces…and I hope this influences you, one way or the other.

“I know you all, I have seen you, in your dreams, in your minds, in all you do that makes you human, I see you, I know you…but you do not know me and I don’t know why”   –  Someone important, but no longer alive.

It is a fever.

  The poet

They found the poet outside the park

His steps spoke many words of wine

His upper half seemed half asleep

And his feet walked a crooked line

His arms were spread as if to fly

His lips apart as though to speak

The telltale flush of liquid joy

Told tales of  rum from cheek to cheek

The night herself caroused with him

Drunk on sadness, drunk on care

And drink they drank, the weary lovers

Setting wine against despair

The bonds of reason, broken down

His mind amok, and absent sense

The world in woe, the world in glory

Lay before his presidence

And it was then they walked to him

Rudely rousing man from dream

Casting eye on village bard

Taking man as man would seem

“Sing for us again, o bard

Cast your words at senses keen”

This was why they broke his peace

Winters twice his summers seen

“Sing for us again o bard

Spin sweet words from bitter truth

Stir the embers of your heart

Dig through elder years to youth. And

Let the fountain spring with might!!

Showering us with wisdom earned

Showing us the link in hand

Of teachers harsh and lessons learned

Free yourself from wine’s embrace!

We would hear a tale or two”

Turns to them, a wizened face

“Ask not man, but what is due.”

Graying eyes regard the gathered

Moving on, from face to face

“The world whirls in the hands of time

And yet all things remain in place”

“As yet all men remain the same

The board reset a dozen times

Pi-eces unaltered, so is game

Though rearranged, the given lines

You come to me as bank to debtor

You plague me with unbridled want

Says at last, man to tormentor

‘Cease at once your unjust haunt”"

It is a fever

“It is not a gift so given

It is not a boon bestowed

Nor is sight beheld as blessing

When the eyes have overflowed

With the sorrows of existence

Pain cavorts with all men born

Know the price of your persistence

Hear the words of man forlorn

What is loss compared to weakness?

What is pain compared to need?

When the soul suffers from sickness

To give blood to those who bleed

O for those suffering in secret

O for hidden scars concealed

Know a secret’s mark of secrets

Is in wounds that never healed

The world at large, and I remain

Numb in spirit, numb of mind

My inner coldness feed by pain

Reaped from years left far behind

It is a fever that I have

It is an illness I possess

It is a symptom that you worship

It is a sign that you profess

To love, to need, to love to hear

While I remain diseased of soul

You chant and clap then disappear

Then falls to me, each telling’s toll

It is a sadness that I feel

It is madness that I suffer

When the muses offer gifts

Turn your backs and run for cover

Talent has a price, and paid

This price I have, each passing day

Rise to cup and rise to can

Drink my fill then come what may

All my masters come before me

Warned me of the poet’s curse

Know you all of Byron’s story

Know you all that Poe’s was worse

Happiness is bound to beauty

Joy to all that beauty, see

But for those that birth said beauty

All is pain and tragedy

Listen to my fading voice, now

Listen to my silent plea

Know the doom of every poet

And ask of this, no more from me

I will fellowship with Bacchus

Gimlets of the finest sort

Rise to can and drunken glory

Fall to pleasure and cavort

Now my night bids me return

Wine is all that shields from sorrow

Sets me free from all concern

Trouble enough, will be tomorrow”

His soul unburdened, back unbent

All is caught in a lengthy pause

He turns to go, the air is rent

With sounds of cheer, and of applause

Now lowering balding head to ground

“Man may speak but none may hear

Sing for us again o Bard,

Has now become a thing to fear”

First post this year. There will be more. Someone important is no longer here and because of that I’ve decided to quote some lines from Death, Be Not Proud by John Donne :

…From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,

Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,

And soonest our best men with thee do go,

Rest of their bones, and soul’s delivery.

Relax And Laugh

Its Satuuuuuuurday! And holy crap I already feel sleepy at half past 9 p.m, and that is just so wrong on all proportions. Today was one of those monotonous days in which I had little time to be the couch potato I had planned on being for the earlier part of the day. I wasn’t able to get some reading done either, so that part kinda crushed me. But, whatever tomorrow never dies so I’m gonna get the to-do list checked out eventually.
I can probably guess most of you guys had a better day. It’s not like my day was horrible. It was just painted in monochrome, and that can get pretty dull overtime, hence the monotone (oh yeah I’m spilling bars, bazaar). You know the drill people, let’s get on with the laughter (or chuckles).
(Remember clicking to enlarge.)

Dinosaur Comics leading the murder today people! Yeah, we’ve all grown to love it. We’ve got…. Kakujomics! Yes it lives still and is breathing as well. Hopeless-Empty-Abyss follows up, and today’s post closes with xkcd.
In other random yet awesome news, today is @weird_oo‘s birthday! You’ll remember her from such places as Phantom Pages and such posts as The Grim Reaper! She’s still as beautiful as ever and yet she’ll tell you she’s old, so take any age related phrase she thros your way with a pinch of vinegar people. And in case you didn’t notice, she’s a March baby, just like me. And aren’t March babies awesome? Happy Birthday Chi! Long life, prosperity, lots of cake, slices of pie and chilled red wine to boot!

Nigerian Scammers Get Scammed By Australian Woman!

When I read this, I was LMAO (Laughing My Ass Of for those people that are not in tune with society). It’s  a great story of karma being an ugly biatchh. The story is rather interesting; This Aussie woman had provided her bank account information to some Scammers to assist in transferring money they received through their account via a popular car sales website. So sure enough, some deal was struck and she was meant to keep only 8% but ended up keeping all the money, totaling $35,000 USD the con men had received. The lady, Cochrane-Ramsey, is said to be sentenced next month. This story brought me back to a random question I asked after watching Omar from the TV series “The Wire”; Is it wrong/Illegal to steal from a thief? Leave a comment below.

The F&B Show – Dead On Arrival!

Tonight (depending on if its still Tuesday Jan 31st where you are), myself and the veteran radio host on gidilounge’s The Foxy P show, @thefoxhimself hosted our maiden episode of the critically acclaimed F&B show. Well ok, not critically acclaimed. We occupied gidilounge radio (I sure hope we do not get fired though) and went on a rant galore for 2.5hrs. As a techy, this our horrah as co-hosts could be likened to the Nokia N9; a device that was already dead before it came out.

Anyways, we touched on alot of things ranging from education, gbagaun, race and tribalism, sex, politics and what have you. It was great and if you have the time, I say you listen to it.

Enjoy.

Verse 1

I got rent money. I need gas money.
I want Dangote money. I want gov money.
My people in the streets cry & pour out their heart for me.
& tell me how much they hate to be in this country.
Yea, & lately our country’s done us the meanest.
Tell us these promises & don’t ever mean it.
We’re in the dark, light up Nigeria. Electricity. I ain’t never seen it.
They don’t care about this inconvenience.
Always lying!

Yea.
& uncomfortable I sit
Like Baba Suwe, I’m dealing with this shit!
*Bring Biafra back in fight for a split.*
But I love my ppl too much that I cannot quit!
I swear!
Too lying corrupt, 2 corrupt lying.
Feed my people plz do something.
They treat us like we’re slaves out here. There is No fkn loving.
But I’m in it so…
This is minuscule.
I Wanna see us grow.
The newest bill making Nigeria’s issues apparent.
We say we the bomb. That’s boko haram trying to scare us.
Luckily, we survivors! Green white green!
So we don’t care if we get deported to live with the terrorists.
Dreams akatas can buy.
If oyinbos were in our shoes they wouldn’t survive.
That’s Only cause we know we are superior.
So fuck whoever hating on Nigeria!
Of course.

Yea!

Bring on your ammunition

Bring on your arsenal

The fact is… you can’t fuck with us!
Verse 2
Fuel under ya. But it’s still foreign to Nigeria.
We’ve talked change for years
When is it gonna come to ya?
Can’t tell u how angry I get when the gov says they ain’t got it.
But they’re all wealthier than Barack. Let’s just think about it.
GEJ hear me please,
We’re trying so hard to be friendly.
But being physical is so tempting
Trynna feed our kids but their stomachs remain empty.
Tell Your kids you ain’t got it. Why don’t u let them down gently!
Why does my country still remain deprived?
Keep stabbing us in the back & then tell us to to still survive.
Telling us *Goodluck & have Patience*  won’t keep us alive
Tell us to thrive. Only reason we’re not demised is Nigerian pride.
And they’re trynna bring us down.
But there’s strength in numbers.
We stayed up. No tire. I’m talkn No Rubber.
& if they decide to shoot me with tear gas,
I might cry but won’t go asunder.
Yea.

The fuel prices are high…
We’ll occupy till change comes.
I salute all my soldiers
Stand united & stay strong!
Dreams Akatas can buy.
They said our government is a crime.
It wasn’t a lie.
We fight cuz we know they are inferior.

#OccupyNigeria Video Project – Dreams Akatas Can Buy!

I am sure Folks in the states are like “akata?” hmmm. Is this meant to stir up controversy? Absolutely but before you run away, there is a much bigger goal with this project. I’ll explain:

We are all aware of the recent nationwide protest that erupted as a result of the hike in fuel prices. Nigerians believed this was the last straw. it was more about the frustration the average Nigerian has kept lurking inside for so long towards our leaders and their corrupt, incompetent ways. It was a call to arms; it was, as many people screamed, a time to abide by our national anthem; it was a nation saying Enough Is Enough. There is a caveat to this great opportunity. Knowing Nigerians, and this is a personal observation, we have a very short term memory. We tend to go back to our houses and forget this ever happened and then resort to our staple ways, gossip and more gossip, in the comfort of our homes while our leaders milk the country dry.

I hope I have set the tone. Now to this project. A group of people on gidilounge radio (gidilounge.com) made a song, Dreams Akatas Can Buy (its a remake of the Drake Song “dreams”) and the reception has pushed those folks to make a video of it. You’re like hmmm, video? what does this have to do with me? well read on and see for yourself. We hope you participate:

President Jonathan’s Second Fuel Subsidy Removal Speech

The President of the Federal republic of Nigeria addressed the Nation not too long ago and said the following;

Dear  Compatriots,
1.     This is the second time in two weeks I will address you on the deregulation of  the downstream petroleum sector. In the last seven days, the nation has  witnessed a disruption of economic activities.  Although, the economic  imperatives for the policy have been well articulated by government, the  Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) went ahead to  declare a nationwide strike.

2.     There was also near-breakdown of law and order in certain parts of the country  as a result of the activities of some persons or groups of persons who took  advantage of the situation to further their narrow interests by engaging in acts  of intimidation, harassment and outright subversion of the Nigerian state. I  express my sympathy to those who were adversely affected by the  protests.
3.     At the inception of the deregulation policy, Government had set up the Justice  Alfa Belgore Committee to liaise with Labour and other stakeholders to address  likely grey areas in the policy, but despite all our efforts, Labour refused the  option of dialogue and also disobeyed a restraining order of the National  Industrial Court of Nigeria.

4.     However, following the intervention of the Leadership of the National Assembly,  and other well-meaning Nigerians, Labour accepted to meet with government, but  this yielded no tangible result.

5.    It  has become clear to government and all well-meaning Nigerians that other  interests beyond the implementation of the deregulation policy have hijacked the  protest. This has prevented an objective assessment and consideration of all the  contending issues for which dialogue was initiated by government. These same  interests seek to promote discord, anarchy, and insecurity to the detriment of  public peace.

6.     Government appreciates that the implementation of the deregulation policy would  cause initial hardships and commends Nigerians who have put forth suggestions  and credible alternatives in this regard. Government also salutes Nigerians who  by and large, conducted themselves peacefully while expressing their grievances.  Let me assure you that government will continue to respect the people’s right to  express themselves within the confines of the law and in accordance with the  dictates of our democratic space.

7.     Government will continue to pursue full deregulation of the downstream petroleum  sector. However, given the hardships being suffered by Nigerians, and after due  consideration and consultations with state governors and the leadership of the  National Assembly, government has approved the reduction of the pump price of  petrol to N97 per litre. The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency  (PPPRA) has been directed to ensure compliance with this new pump  price.

8.     Government is working hard to reduce recurrent expenditure in line with current  realities and to cut down on the cost of governance. In the meantime, government  has commenced the implementation of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment  projects: including the Federal Government- assisted mass transit programme  which is already in place, and job creation for the youth.

9.      Furthermore, the legal and regulatory regime for the petroleum industry will be  reviewed to address accountability issues and current lapses in the Industry. In  this regard, the Petroleum Industry Bill will be given accelerated attention.  The report of the forensic audit carried out on the NNPC is being studied with a  view to implementing the recommendations and sanctioning proven acts of  corruption in the industry.

10.  Let me assure  Nigerians that this administration is irrevocably committed to tackling  corruption in the petroleum industry as well as other sectors of the economy.  Consequently, all those found to have contributed one way or the other to the  economic adversity of the country will be dealt with in accordance with the  law.

11.  My dear  compatriots, I urge you to show understanding for the imperatives of the  adjustment in the pump price of petrol and give government your full support to  ensure its successful implementation. I further appeal to Nigerians to go back  to work and go about their normal duties as government has made adequate  arrangements for the protection of life and property throughout the  federation.

12.    Government will not condone brazen acts of criminality and subversion. As  President, I have sworn to uphold the unity, peace and order of the Nigerian  State and by the grace of God, I intend to fully and effectively discharge that  responsibility.  Let me add that we are desirous of further engagements  with Labour. I urge our Labour leaders to call off their strike, and go back to  work.

13.   Nigeria  belongs to all of us and we must collectively safeguard its unity.

14.   Thank you. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
GOODLUCK EBELE  JONATHAN, GCFR
President,
Federal  Republic of Nigeria
