Passage Through Midnight Part 2

Hello again fellow readers, how do you do this fine day? Frankly, it’s been pitfalls for me all through. And worst yet, not that many checkpoints around for me to click on.
But that’s beside the point… we’re all here for what began yesterday and is to continue today and will continue onwards. In case you missed the first installment, not to worry you get read it here. Now then, let’s get on with the show.

Eric lay on his bed, in his dorm room at Jamewoods College, trying to plan out what his next few hours would be like. He had finished his assignments, written his paper, and finished the textbook a friend had decided to lend him. With all work done, there seemed to be nothing else to do. He was already feeling the boredom consume him when his phone rang. Please let it not be another one of his lazy classmates.
“Yep. Speak.”
“When things begin to appear out of place, what is the normal analysis?”
“That the normal is probably shifting towards the abnormal, or the normal that we were once acclimated with is beginning to change. Most cases though, it’s usually the first. Long time Biola.”
“Not too long, just a few weeks. How are you?
“Apart from inevitable boredom, I’m doing fine thanks. You salutation depicts that it’s about the opposite for you.”
“You can say that. I just downed a chupacabra.”
“In Nigeria???” This was definitely not a social call.
“Yep”
“Have there been other sightings?”
“Chika got one himself. Just a few minutes ago, not long from when I got mine. Care to explain? I believe a migration theory might be in order.”
“Well… I don’t think I’ll be buttressing anything with that. Have you called Seyi?”
“No, Chika’s doing that. Why did you say what you just said?” There was a short pause. Eric had sounded rather disturbed when he declined the theory, and Biola had noticed it.
“The thing is Abiola, chupacabras don’t migrate. There aren’t that many to begin with, and migration would just be within the boundaries of the Americas. I’m pretty sure you know about that.”
“What are you trying to imply exactly?”
“Well, if they indeed needed to migrate, it would be from say Mexico to say Puerto Rico, or something related to that. Worst case scenario, they’d head off to South America. Besides, they can’t swim, so it’s pretty unlikely for them to migrate as far as Africa.”
“Right… what if someone brought them here?”
“Brought them in something like a cargo? It’s possible. Unless of course that person’s a pretty good chupacabra charmer, and such people don’t exist… yet. The only way fathomable is if the person or people found a way to control the mind of the creatures, or possess them… whichever sounds more viable”
At the word possess, Biola remembered the way it died.
“Eric… how do chus die?”
“Chus? Oh… you’ve given them a nickname.”
“Chika’s doing, not mine.”
“That isn’t surprising. ‘Chus’ die just like any other animal; then they rot and decay. Why, why do you ask?”
“Well, the ones we killed here sort of disintegrated… into green dust clouds.”
“Oh… my… disintegrated?”
“Yes, into clouds of green dust. Is that in any remote way possible?”
“… No. That doesn’t ever happen to land creatures.”
“So… what is your thesis on this? You think they’re possessed?
“Believe me that’s exactly what I was thinking.”
“So… this is paranormal?”
“More like supernatural…”
They decided to wait and see what Seyi had as her own conclusion.

Sorry, I’m not here right now. Please leave a message and I’ll get back to you.
Beep. Click. Ring…
Sorry, I’m no-
“Aargh c’mon Seyi, pick up. You can’t be at a party at a time like this.”
Click. Ring…
“Heeeeey, how are you?”
“It’s about time. I’m good and giddy, you?”
“I’m okay, thanks. Sorry, was in the shower that’s why I didn’t pick up.”
“Well at least your voice is still lovely.”
“Thank you. And yours still has its deepness; which is a good thing.”
“Now you want to make sure both of us blush. But we have to keep our cheeks in check for now, something downright strange is up.”
“Considering you’re the one calling, I was expecting you to sound rather excited.”
“True, but only when it’s good strange, not bad strange. And I’m talking chus.”
“Eh… chus you say?”
“Chupacabras; Biola and I killed one each, at different times, and different locations.”
“South-West and East… that’s… very abnormal.”
“Indeed. I was thinking probably migration or something.”
“Eh… well, the thing is; chupacabras don’t migrate. Their movements are restricted to North America and the islands close by. I wouldn’t even imagine them going so far into South America.”
“Heh… so it means someone cast a spell on the ones that we saw here?”
“Spell? Probably. Mind control? Sounds viable… Possession maybe? Even better.”
“Eh… I was making a joke Seyi. You didn’t have to affirm that it could happen.”
“Sorry, but that can pretty much sum it up. They don’t migrate, meaning someone or some people brought them there. And chus (she’s been caught too) aren’t what you would normally want to tame. Not like there are chu-charmers as we have snake charmers. So, the only reasonable explanation -besides the fact that it could have been a dream which it unfortunately isn’t- is someone had them… possessed sort of so they could do his/her bidding. Kinda like a ghost story thingy of sorts.”
“Oh no ho ho… there is no way anyone could be that evil. I mean even my English professor hasn’t thought of having mindless drones to watch his class for anyone trying to escape.”
“Well Chika, what do you want to believe? You killed it didn’t you? It was there right?”
And then he remembered
“Eh… not quite. You see, when I killed it, it vanished into green air.”
“You mean thin air…”
“No, green air… so to speak. It gave out these green dust-like particles when it died. In a sense it was disintegrating.”
“Oh my… this is serious.”
“Tell me about it. Nothing remained but a yellowish smear on the ground.”
“That… definitely wasn’t an ordinary chupacabra… we might be dealing with something really strange here.”
“So… what? You’re saying this is somewhat paranormal?”
“More like supernatural…”
