31 Days of Breast Cancer facts: Day #10 Different types of mango and garri exist, so does different types of breast cancer!

All breast cancers are not the same; there are different types of breast cancer.

Ijebu garri, Imo garri, ogbomosho mango, number 1 mango, sherry mango, you name it, there are so many variations of everything even in nature that you want to tear your fake Brazilian hair off. Oh snap, I just said that didn’t I? But its true, there are even different types of fake hair. I will not be surprised if there are different types of Brazilian weave out there. Back to todays post. I mentioned this yesterday when that fact alluded to a different strain of breast cancer that is peculiar to women of African American descent. Well todays fact takes this up a notch and explains it all. Continue Reading →

31 Days of Breast Cancer facts: Day #9 Yes, Black don’t crack but a worse faith plagues y’all!

The mortality rate from breast cancer is higher for African American women than for white women and women of other races.

If only everything was perfect for the black woman. Your bodies? My goodness, your skin? wowzers. The list of pluses for black women goes on and on but todays fact isn’t as attractive. How? well;

White women are more likely to receive a diagnosis of breast cancer, but African-American women have a higher mortality rate. The mortality rate for breast cancer for African-American women is about 33 per 100,000 women compared to 24 per 100,000 white women. On the other hand, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women have lower mortality rates compared to white women.

I would want to argue that it has everything to do with late diagnosis but I would be wrong. Even the Boob doctor learnt something very new today. Black woman are usually diagnosed with a different strain of breast cancer. I had no idea strains of breast cancer exist. Read for yourself; Continue Reading →

31 Days of Breast Cancer facts: Day #8 Numbers are of the Devil.

While breast cancer mortality has gone down in recent years, too many women still die of the disease each year.

So I read this fact/truth and I’m like huh? What the hell is going on here. The fact is that although the death rate has dropped, year on year, more women die from breast cancer. Now you see why rates and all that statistical bollocks those bloke on Wall Street conjure up are what is causing all the Occupy Wall Street riots there right (this is ignoring greed by the way)? I need to locate those my econometrics and quantitative finance friends and strangle them. Microsoft Excel can take a piss. Now I’m definitely digressing. My bad.

To be honest, it was almost impossible figure out how this would connect to our international audience since it’s really just a lot of facts about the US. Something did hit me and I quote; Continue Reading →

31 Days of Breast Cancer facts: Day #7 People in the know freak out about breast cancer. The unaware?…

Most people think they have a higher risk of breast cancer than they actually do.

I find this particular fact (remember, we get this from NBCC) most interesting. Well, I might find tomorrows fact “most interesting” just like I did days one, two, three, four, five and six  but that’s beyond the scope of this write-up.

Overall, a women’s lifetime risk of developing cancer is about 1 in 8. That means that if a group of 100 women live until the age of 90, about 12 may develop breast cancer in their lifetime. However, according to some surveys and studies, many women mistakenly believe that they have a 1 in 8 risk every year. Others mistakenly interpret the statistic to mean that 1 in 8 women have had a diagnosis of breast cancer. If you live to be 90 years old, you have a 1 in 8 or 12.5% chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during your life. Continue Reading →

31 Days of Breast Cancer facts: Day #6 Breast Cancer is not a generational curse from your mumsy!

Most women who are diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease.

Another day, another breast cancer fact. This one is rather unique because many that know about breast cancer think you most likely have had a history of the disease in your family. This fact tells you that it’s clearly not the case. Similarly, breast cancer is not some curse some ogbanje priestess sent to your mother and said “*rattles shekere* All ya Childlen, hmmm, shall lose their bleasts. Their husbands will only have one to pless”** or something along those lines.  The fact is clear that; Continue Reading →

31 Days of Breast Cancer facts: Day #5 The biggest risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and growing older…

The biggest risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and growing older. The average age of diagnosis is 61.

That’s what you get for getting Adam to eat of the fruit in the garden. Yes I said it. I blame you ladies for all the wrong in this world. That don’t mean I don’t care about y’all enough to continue with the posts. :) I kid, I kid.. Anyways, our previous posts shed some light on this fact in that breast cancer occurrences in men are almost non existent. Now this new truth sheds some more light yet again: Continue Reading →

31 Days of Breast Cancer facts: Day #4 Technically, men have boobs and get breast cancer too!

Men do get breast cancer…

Well damn! This is going to be something that is new to many men out there. The message is rather clear; we are not immune to breast cancer. Only makes our putting up these facts as dudes even more worthwhile. According to todays email

It is estimated that in 2011, 2,140 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among US men. While less than 1% of new breast cancer diagnoses occur among men, it is possible for men to develop the disease. Of the approximate 40,420 deaths from breast cancer this year, an estimated 450 of them will be men.

No, you don’t have to have oranges on there to have breast cancer. Be aware.

Tomorrow is another day.

31 Days of Breast Cancer facts: Day #1 A shitload of women have a history of breast cancer!

More than 2 1/2 million women in the US have a history of breast cancer.

I got my first email from NBCC regarding the image above not too long ago. Let the 31 days of breast cancer facts commence witout delay. It is a fact that excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the US. How about the rest of the word you might wonder? Researchers from the University of Washington report that the number of new cases of breast cancer has almost tripled over the last 30yrs. If you are one for numbers, it has gone up from 640,000 in 1980 to more than 1.6 million in 2010. Emphasis should be placed on new cases or in other words, these ladies and men (yes men do get breast cancer) prior to 2010 had no idea they had anything. This is serious yo! Continue Reading →
