
It’s an understatement to say that 2011 has been an amazing year for Donald Glover. Besides being one of the stars in the critically acclaimed NBC comedy Community, Glover has also had a very successful music career under the moniker Childish Gambino; a name he generated from the online Wu-Tang name generator. Childish Gambino has been releasing a steady stream of free music since 2008, but 2011 will see the release of his first official studio LP -under independent label Glassnote Records- titled Camp. Where as his previous releases consisted of him rapping over various indie rock instrumentals (I am Just a Rapper 1 & 2), or a directionless collection of good songs (Culdesac), Camp is a coherent album, built from the ground up (with sole production by Glover himself, and friend/composer Ludwig Goransson) with the intent of telling a story. The use of violins, a choir and a stadium sized “arena rock” sound, coupled with Gambino’s sincere lyrics sets the stage for an engaging album.
