Anyone who’s been following the blog (and let’s face it, that’s everyone right right?) will remember my earlier post about how I was taking Fairy Tail and what it has had in store for me over the past hours I had spent in its stead. Now, 126 episodes in and I deem it fit to create a sequel to that original post. 126 episodes.. can you believe it? That’s incredible!
If you remember well, when I wrote the first post on Fairy Tail there were about 130 episodes for the show, and I had a milestone of covering over 100 episodes to reach my eternal goal. Now currently anticipating the next move of 127, I have 34 episodes left before I reach the latest (which is 160 if you’re counting) before I can shift base to another alleyway and see what that has in store for me.
So what’s the dealio? 127 episodes and I’m here to share with you some of the things I’ve noticed in the lands of the Fairy Tail wizards. I should warn you all that spoilers abound in probably every paragraph, but I’l be as subtle as possible so I don’t give out just about everything that is going to happen. Plus, to make it easier on you I’m going to hypnotize you into thinking these are teasers so you’ll want to watch the episodes. And for whoever it may concern, I spent a chunk of time laughing my butt off watching a YouTube channel at 1:57 am before I went back to writing this. So here we go!

My Fairy Tail Tale
36 episodes after I watched the first one that had my jaws dropping at the insane and over-exuberant antics performed by the strange characters I had been given -the talkative girl, the flying cat and the fire-breathing guy who couldn’t last on any moving vehicle- I’m still asking myself when I’ll be able to predict what’s going to happen next, and each time I decide to feel like a whiz and make some predictions which of course get tossed back at me most of the time… That is the fate I face as I constantly watch Fairy Tail, following its absorbing and at certain times ridiculous storyline. But the better part of it? Even the characters involved tend to break the 4th wall and complain about how lousy some things can get. You don’t see that kind of humour mixed up with so much action nowadays without the action feeling redundant and too pushy.
Fairy Tail is a manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima, which has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine since August 23, 2006 and still continues to be made to this very day. The anime adaptation began in 2006 and has spanned over 130 episodes as of this moment. That means I have over 100 episodes to dash through if I want to catch up properly, and I do not plan on using manga to speed things up anytime soon.
The story follows Lucy Heartfilia, a Celestial Mage who eventually joins her favorite mage guild after meeting Natsu Dragneel, a boy who was trained by the dragon Igneel and got the name Salamander. She comes to know the people of Fairy Tail and becomes especially close to Gray Fullbuster, an ice mage with a habit of stripping who is also Natsu nemesis and close pal; as well as Erza Scarlet, a mage who uses the magic style Ex-Quip that allows her to change armor and gives her access to lots of armor at any given time. She has been shown to use her Ex-Quip to wear a construction worker’s uniform, a chef’s hat and apron as well as a slim fitting dinner gown; and Happy, a flying, talking cat that hatched out of an egg Natsu found years ago.
Fairy Tail blends together action with comedy with humor with tragedy with plain stupidity. It’s a mix that’s not done very often and has a tendency to get annoying at certain times, and admittedly it does. However, it redeems itself by not taking itself too serious and then switching the tone abruptly on you… so you’re left trying to relax and then you’re hit with an event that has you gasping on the edge of your seat waiting for the next sequence of scenes to unfold themselves. One thing I particularly like is the good natured comedy involved in the show, and the way this is augmented by Natsu’s carefree attitude.
For example, at one point in later episodes, a village head begs the team (comprising Lucy, Natsu, Happy, Gray and Erza) to help destroy a violet moon because it was turning them into demons. While a sorrowful song plays in the background and Lucy is trying to give her condolences, Natsu suddenly bursts out pointing out the horns the villagers have and exclaiming on how cool they are. Then he’s reprimanded and told the villagers don’t see it as cool and then the story goes back to its normal gloomy pitch.
Foes in this show has varied on different levels; from dark guilds to rival official guilds to past friends, it’s like there’s a never ending current of story to tap from when you look closer at the picture. From the outside, it usually seems like episodes are just different collections of different moments, never intertwining unless by chance supporting characters decide to slip out from one plot hole and land in a major role later on. As to be expected, mages take on missions and receive pay according to the class of the mission, and Lucy’s team is notorious for destroying various parts of the city when on missions; usually meaning that most (if not all) of their reward goes into damages and repairs. It’s even a continuous gag for Lucy complain about not being able to pay the rent on her apartment time and time again because of the problems her team face with consecutive missions.
Fairy Tail looks like it still has quite a long way to go, and while I don’t want to sound all nampy-pampy about it, I think my attachment with this anime may just rival my attachment to Beelzebub. After all, it was Beelzebub’s ending that pushed me into properly checking out Fairy Tail, so I’ll say that’s a fair things to say. Any doubts on Fairy Tail shouldn’t stand strong, as the show caters to quite a wide category of people. If you’re the punch, punch, kick type this will entertain you. If comedy’s your thing, this is a good stop. Engaging story? It has its moments too. Extreme fan service? Maybe Maken-Ki or Queen’s Rebellion will be better for you. But really, Fairy Tail is so full of colors you may lose count of how many times you get amazed.
I’m sure to continue. And when the loads of free time comes, I’ll load up the episodes and have a happily ever after marathon to get up to speed with things.
Shi, shi, tou…
The Beelzebubian Effect
Some time ago, say 2 weeks ago before my exams had officially kicked off their badassery, I decided to catch on several of the things I had backlogs in; gaming news, actual news, happenings in the world, webcomics and of course anime. Of course catching up with the others would be a hell of a ride so I decided to get their respective bookmarks in place and focus on the one that would take me 30 minutes (or less) to complete each episode… that being anime. Generally, I’d go first for shows I’ve been following before I head over to the news one on my list, and at this particular time my radar decided to rest on Beelzebub (which I’ve talked about a bit here). Now those that know a little something about me know my irreplaceable love for Beelzebub, so imagine how surprised I became when I saw I wasn’t that far behind in episodes. I didn’t really understand what was up so I decided to do some digging and know why I had only about 4 episodes left to clear the table, and that’s when I read the news that saddened me.
Beelzebub had ended its run after 60 episodes.
Minutes after that I realized Bleach too had also ended its run (although its manga will run for one more arc before that too ends).
I didn’t quite get it. Surely these shows that I was really getting into could not possibly end just like that. Though it saddened me because I had finally gotten back on track, I could understand Bleach’s scenario, after all having 366 episodes over the span of 8 years under your belt is no small task (Bleach began airing October 2004 and ended March 2012). But Beelzebub was what I couldn’t understand… it had begun sometime 2011 and was already ending 2012. It’s not a Bones production, so I couldn’t understand why it was over. Oga had Baby Beel to take care of, and Baby Beel was meant to grow up a bit and then destroy humanity. So why did they decide to end it? Oga fought some of the Pillar Masters of Behemoth’s 34 Pillar Division, not all. We didn’t get to know a large portion of them either, so what was wrong? Why did it have to end?
Finding out I had lost 2 shows just like that hit me, not in the sense that I didn’t want to eat any longer (I ate a chunkful while watching Beelzebub’s last episodes), but in the sense of having to let something finally go. Accepting wasn’t that easy, and even the final episode of Beelzebub got my eyes a little watery (don’t judge me!) because of both the realization that it was over and the opening story. The ending of course proved that once again the Demon Lord is a flaky cool dude, but I don’t want to spoil anything just yet.
I didn’t watch the final episodes of Bleach until about 3 days later, when I finally picked up the spunk to do just that. I still find it somewhat hard to come to terms with the fact that those two are gone. Oh, and from the looks of things Naruto may be folding its own sheets too, from the looks of things.
What’s my point with all this blabbing? Letting go is some tough stuff, even if it’s for the most mundane things. So far as we’ve got some sort of attachment with them, we’re bound to have them grow with us in one way or the other… like a favorite pair of socks or that ring you and a friend got when you decided to start acting out Power Rangers during breaktime. Letting go is something that isn’t a day’s job, and as much as my non-emotional and logically oriented mind has helped me move on from certain things in life (take my last break-up, which I managed to move on from under about 3 days… I wish I was lying), letting go of something as simple as a TV show has hit me well, and I can say to some extent I can fill someone else’s shoes on this matter. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I’m an emotionless warlord or some shinobi who would kill for the greater good (that’s an option these days right?), neither am I saying I place digital entertainment over the companionship of someone who’s real, the whole relationship thing was a plethora of crazy so maybe it was thanks to my subconscious mind that I managed to get over the whole ordeal. To be honest, it crushed me deep when it all happened, and I was too secretive (ashamed even) to confide in people to get some of the burden off. Needless to say, I tackled it almost alone (I think I told only 2 ladies about it) and managed to forge ahead and focus on the holidays, because some days after it ended I was to be in IB.
Letting this go is difficult, and Beelzebub taught me that in a different light. But on the bright side there are others that can take it’s slot (note: not place). I am thinking of getting on the Fairy Tail wagon (as I have told all earlier), and silently I’m praying that it’s not when I get the hang of it it’ll end its run. I know there are others as well, and no please don’t mention One Piece. I’ve tried that, enjoyed it, but not moved to continue with it like that. But no beef, other things exist so we don’t really have to feel the complete absence of one thing.
Did that make sense? I’m not too sure… this wine still has its effect on me. *hic*
Anime View
It’s a great day to be alive, don’t you think? The month of April is finally behind us (and boy am I happy for that simple fact). That means we’re past the first quarter of the year, which like play has been speeding past us all. With all things aside, summer is on the way. That means hot days, glaring suns, more zobo, creamier ice-creams, skimpier dresses, sexier bodies, newer shows and more goals to lay down and achieve. While I leave you all to ponder on what goals you have set in store for yourselves, I’m gonna draw the anime-centric ones to the Summer 2012 list of upcoming anime. From what I’ve seen, it’s not particularly a bad list so far, but I’ve got so much left over I’m not quite sure what and what to pick just yet.

Among the first things I did was to scroll down the Movies section, and it seems a new Naruto movie (Naruto: Road To Ninja) is in the works. He’s looking much older (that could be just the art) and he’s got his dead parents with with. Also, Fairy Tail is having one as well (Fairy Tail: Houou no Miko) and I have to say I’m inclined to check it out, I have been getting ready to join the Fairy Tail bandwagon. Release dates are July and August respectively. Then we’ve got Ame-Agari no Kimi, which I have no idea about. But that looks like a manga page, and that is definitely a zombie’s head. If there’s going to be a zombie movie, then I could go ahead with it. Haven’t had anything zombie in months (maybe a year plus even).
With regards to anime, Kingdom looks to be a pretty good bet. Reminds me so much of Samurai X/Dragonball Z, and those were great shows. Also, the girl on the left reminds me of Azula (The Last Airbender anyone?). La storia della Arcana Famiglia seems to be in the Black Lagoon territory (if you’re not familiar with Black Lagoon, look for it and give it a try), and the synopsis sounds a little along the lines of Fate Zero‘s. Hakuouki:Reimei-roku seems badass just by staring at that art, and the synopsis doesn’t sound cliché as opposed to basic anime with female leads.
I’m not entirely sure if I’ll get to cover these, as I’ve only begun to stack up on Eureka Seven AO (expect some first impressions from Detanfy soon) and I’m still hoping to get on Hunter X Hunter, but with current time constraints I’ll make do with what’s available. What choices are you going for this time? Any here interest you, or are you going to hit last season’s list for more?
