First Look: Alcatraz, the new show from the creator of LOST

JJ Abrams, creator of acclaimed mystery/drama series LOST, is set to premiere a new show in the fall called Alcatraz. I’m a huge fan of Lost and I’m starting to get into Fringe (another Abrams show) so I’m very excited for this show.
Lets see what its about… Continue Reading →
Relax And Laugh
Happy New Month’s First Saturday!! Well… I figured, since I didn’t wish everyone a happy new month on Tuesday, I might as well wish everyone a happy first Saturday of the new month. And while I recognise this ridiculous greeting, let me chip in a little gratitude for you folks who’ve been egging us on. It’s not quite easy, believe me… Continue Reading →
Star Driver New opening theme
NOTE: Youtube always takes the videos down, so I don’t know how long this one will last.
Oh boy……
Star Driver has reached its half way point and with that comes the changing of its opening theme song. The new theme song is called Shining Star and its performed by 9nine. I think 9nine also performed the shows first ending theme, which as also been replaced by another song now.
This new opening has a great animated battle between Taubunr and another adversary as well as a quick glimpse of what might be Glittering Crux leader Heads’ Cybody called Reshbal.
Personally I preferred the first opening song but to each his own.
You can read my first impressions of the series from a while ago HERE
Detanfy’s Best of Music #20 – 16
Its Tuesday an with that comes part two of my best of music 2010 list.
If you missed yesterdays list, I urge you to check it out HERE
Now lets get today underway, first up…
Chiddy (formerly known as Proto) from Philadelphia alternative (READ: good) hip hop duo “Chiddy Bang”, joins Eldee the Don in the #20 spot with their hit “My Guys Dem”.
This song is an anthem to the guys or “awon big boi’s”, this is the song you play when you go clubbing with the fella’s or just looking to have a good night with your bro’s. The song is over flowing with Swell (Chiddy’s new slang term for swagger). Its the definitive Entourage song. I remember blasting this song through New York with my cousin and his pals.
Eldee is a smart man, other Naija artists based in yankee would have probably shunned Chiddy but Eldee embraced him and they made an amazing song together. As time goes by the Naija contemporary music movement is getting closer and closer to mainstream yankee music, next thing you know we will have a song featuring Eldee and Yung Joc, oh wait……
Chiddy lays down some tight rhymes in this song. I’m particularly impressed with the fact that he can balance both his yankee and naija styles to form something unique.
I also have a funky dance to this song and no one will EVER see it.
You can listen to the song HERE
Modest Mouse has been around for a LONG time and I have always been a casual fan of them. Their album “The Moon & Antarctica” is generally considered one of their best efforts to date. I wouldn’t say I have a favorite song from the album, but “Gravity rides everything” is definitely a stand out song for me.
The song uses gravity as a metaphor for the events that happen in ones life. There are just some things you cant change no matter how much you try. No matter how much you jump, you will always fall down. It is what it is basically. Oddly enough the song isn’t all that depressing melody-wise. Its melancholic? yes but it also has this vibe to it. Its like catharsis. The song is telling you what it is and how you cant change it and why you must accept it and grow from there. Its somewhat enlightening actually. Lord knows how many times I have listened to this song while looking out of the window at the world I cant change. ah well…
Listen HERE
Oh boy!
Yesi, native of Ibadan, Oyo state is definitely one of the best naija rappers out now.
He is currently based in New York and the man is a representation of the modern day Nigerian dream. He is smart, young, talented and (legally) successful. The man has the world in the palm of his hands right now. He manages to balance being a rapper with his day time job at JP Morgan (I think?), just like he manages to perfectly balance his naija and yankee influences. Listening to his song, I hear so many references to both Ibadan and Nigerian-American lifestyle. The man truly is something else.
His lady friendly song “U got it” has become that one song that automatically plays in my head when I see a sexy girl:
“Omoge je ka soro”………”she’s so hypnotic, swear her booty’s wired on hydraulics, her body’s talking and I guess I’m hooked up on her phonics”.
The beat is raw, its exotic, its sexy. When ever I hear the song, I usually visualize one kind of out of this world “thick madam” walking/jiggling past me.
All that aside, its a great song, in a great mixtape. If you haven’t listened to Yesi yet, then I feel bad for you. The guy is made up of nothing but talent, and has passion for what he does. definitely a sensible role model.
Listen to his entire Break off mixtape HERE
You CAN NOT appreciate this song if you don’t listen to the entire album “We have the facts and we’re voting yes”, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the song.
Death Cab lead signer Ben Gibbard is an amazing song writer and story teller. It took me days to fully interpret what “We have the facts… ” is about. Basically the album tells the story of a girl Ben’s character met, starting with the opening song “Title Track” and ending with Scientist Studies, the album chronicles their entire relationship.
Scientist Studies acts as both an ending and a recap of the entire album.
*Spoilers*
The relationship ended badly, horribly actually. He killed her in the song before Scientist Studies called “No joy in mudville” and eventually himself in this song.
*Spoilers*
so why do I like this song so much? well I like a good story and this story/album had a well constructed ending and it also resonates with me in some ways.
This song is for those who have been in a relationship that was horrible. you went in expecting great things, you thought he or she was the love of your life, but all you got were “ broken hearts and new addictions”. This song is catharsis for those who have lost everything good and only gained bad things from a relationship. Its an emotional release.
I urge you to listen carefully to the entire album starting HERE
but you can listen to just Scientist Studies HERE
Abandoed Pools, oh how I’ve missed you.
Tommy Walter aka Abandoned Pools is an amazing singer, song writer and multi instrumentalist. The man can play pretty much anything, but as he stated himself, his first love will always be Bass.
Abandoned pools has been one of my favorite artists ever since I heard the opening song he contributed to the short lived animated comedy series CLONE HIGH. I decided to listen to all his other songs and I fell in love.
Listening to his songs is a pleasure for me. His albums “Humanistic” and “Armed to the Teeth” have been on repeat ever since I discovered the man. I always listen to an Abandoned Pools song at least thrice a week. Abandoned Pools has always been slightly underground so its rare to hear his songs on the radio. His two previous albums released in 2005 and 2005 are 5 whole years apart. His latest album is coming out early next year and I can not be more excited, I’m actually going to BUY it……WITH MONEY! I know right?
I should probably talk about the song “Legionnaire”. Its Abandoned Pools first new song in years. The very first time I listened to the song, I could already hear that signature Abandoned Pools sound. Its booming and grand in scale yet simple and straight to the point. It gives off this feeling of distress and bad-assery.
“The song gets its title from the Bible verse “we are legion; for we are many”. Its about purging yourself of your own personal demons” – Tommy Walter
Is this my favorite Abandoned Pools song? not particularly, but it is a great song.
I’m glad Abandoned pools is back and cant wait for the entire album, and hopefully a concert.
You can listen to Legionnaire and download it HERE
watch a video featureette with Tommy HERE
Listen to “The Remedy” from his first album HERE
or “Mercy Kiss” HERE
Alrighty folks, thats it for #20 – 16.
another diverse list of songs, each with their own unique and very personal value to me.
Join us on Wednesday for #15- 11
Have a great day!
Star Driver: My first impressions

The Fall anime season is here, and with it comes exciting new shows. Fall is when the big boys come out to play, its when the cream of the crop anime are launched, so as you would expect I had very high hopes for this fall, sadly I was disappointed, the only shows I picked to watch this fall called “A certain Magical Index” was a show returning for its second season not a brand new show.
Sadly I found nothing new interest EXCEPT one particular show known as Star Driver (full name STAR DRIVER: TAKUTO of the Radiance).Once I read about this show I knew I was going to watch it and love it instantly because Star Driver is created by StudioBONES,my favorite anime studio and developers of some of my personal favorite and critically acclaimed anime such as Full Metal Alchemist, Eureka 7, Xam’d: Lost Memories, Soul Eater and Darker than Black among others.
Anything by BONES is a must watch for me. The studio’s animation is pitch perfect to the very last detail, their story lines are fresh and original and they always tend to do something amazing with their shows.
First of all what is Star Driver about? Well here’s the official plot from the studio
“This story takes place on an island named Southern Cross Isle. One night, a boy named Takuto washes up on shore swimming from the mainland. He later enrolls in Southern Cross High School as a freshmen and makes new friends. However, underneath the school is a group of mysterious giants called Cybodies. Soon Takuto, The “Ginga Bishonen” (or “Galactic Pretty Boy”) sees himself in a fight with a mysterious organization known as “Kiraboshi Juujidan” (Translated to “Glittering Crux Brigade”) which intend to take possession of the island’s Cybodies for their own purposes and break the seals of the shrine maidens, the protectors of the islands secrets.”
And here’s my version
“A boy who calls himself the “galactic pretty boy” (WTF??!!!LOL), ends up on this island where he has to protect this one chick from being captured and having her “seal broken” (sounds a lot like someone wants her virginity) by these group of evil people who wear funny costumes and masks. Our Galactic pretty boy pilots a giant robot (these robots are referred to as Cybodies in the shows) called Taubarn and uses it to fight against the bad guys and their giant robots. Apparently if the bad guys defeat Galactic pretty boy and break this last chick’s seal, they can manifest all the giant robots to real life and use their super powers to take over the world”
Now for my take on the show
Very first thing I noticed, this show as PERFECT animation. I would expect nothing less of BONES. The animation is extremely detailed and fluid, especially the giant robot battles. This shit does not disappoint. I find my self rewinding and re-watching the battles just because of the sheer amazing-ness of it all. It reminds me of the animation from the final battle in Xam’d, my jaw was open, it was pure eye candy, I’m tempted to post a video of the fight from Xam’d here but I wont because my partner hasn’t watched the show yet and I don’t wanna spoil it for him. My point is Star Driver’s fight scene’s are amazingly made and highly entertaining.
Story wise, I’m still a bit confused to be honest, since the show only just started there are so many questions that have been asked but haven’t been answered yet but its definitely intriguing, I want to know the mystery of the island, I want to know who created the Cybodies, I want to know the bad guys ultimate plans, I want to know why Takuto was chosen to be the Galactic Pretty Boy. The characters are interesting enough, I enjoy their interactions and and relationships and it’s interesting how almost everyone on the Island is a bad guy (they wear masks and shit so they don’t all know each others identity).
The main character Takuto (galactic pretty boy) is definitely an interesting individual, he is also very skinny, in fact all the characters on the show are extremely skinny or very physically fit. The character design is definitely intriguing, especially the robots. I mean look at Tauburn (pic below) Look at those mother fucking bad ass hips.

but you know what? I really like this design! Its unconventional, its new, its fresh, its BONES.
As par tone, mood and theme, the show is a mixture of Comedy, Drama and of course action. The comedy bits are very interesting and often outrageous, for example: female characters having fantasies about the galactic pretty boy and another male character hooking up. The most outrageous thing with in the show though is when our main character..well…I think its better I let you watch on your own to get the full effect (the way he swings them hips men. so fabulous)
The drama aspect focuses more on the 3 main characters and the love triangle brewing up between them. its an interesting Dynamic and I”m intrigued to see where it goes. Takuto must protect the maiden Wako (the chick in the middle) and Wako is engaged to the married to Sugata(the blue haired dude, and apparently owner of the most powerful cybody in the world, which for some reason he can’t activate yet), all this while Wako is falling in love with Takuto

and the action? I have mentioned that this shit DOES NOT disappoint. Its simply FABULOUS!

what else is there to say? ah yes! I absolutely love the opening theme song, it represents everything this show is about, its colorful, crazy, fun and just plain fabulous!
Star Driver might not have enough meat on its bones(no pun intended) yet, but it is definitely shaping up to be one of the best new original anime of the year and for sure a new favorite of mine. But who knows, I might just be extremely biased because this show comes from BONES. Either way its a fun show and I look forward to each new episode with anticipation and excitement.
Its most definitely worth watching….
Star Driver: Takuto of the radiance is created by Studio BONES. I am in no way affiliated with BONES, except for the fact that I love and adore them.
